The overall aesthetic is what we call curated wildness – organic in form, but carefully orchestrated in composition. Beds flow freely, with loose plant groupings and native selections that invite movement and seasonal change. There is no formal mulch. Leaf litter is returned to the soil as natural duff. Pruning is done by hand to preserve the softness of form.
The result is a landscape that looks spontaneous, yet is anything but.
A Landscape in Chapters
Several distinct garden areas are woven throughout the properties, each with its own purpose and character:
- A pollinator hillside with meandering paths and a meadow-like palette, designed to support bees, butterflies, and community engagement.
- A sunken garden planted with moisture-loving trees and perennials, where boardwalk-style paths create a quiet, contemplative walk.
- A shaded woodland nook that transforms an old patio into a cool retreat filled with ferns and hosta.
- A coastal front approach with reclaimed granite steps framed by lavender and thyme, balancing structure with softness.
These vignettes are not decorative they’re experiential, reflecting how the landscape is meant to be lived in.
Rare Plants, Personalized Care
The planting palette is extensive, with over 100 varieties across trees, shrubs, and perennials. From Dawn Redwoods to Japanese Stewartia, selections are both bold and thoughtful. Many ideas are initiated by the client, with CMS providing expert execution, adjustments, and long-term care.
These are not static beds. They shift, grow, and evolve – just as the client’s vision does.
